Hi, I'm Michał Frymus, commonly known as Michael Frymus.
I am a Polish/Canadian Director of Photography (Cinematographer), based in Alberta, Canada.
After graduating high school in 2009, I did not know what I wanted to do, so I remained in high school for an additional year. I took a basic 1-credit course that I didn't think would spark my career path. I chose the "Media Arts" class, where I learned the film development for still images and how to make basic videos with camcorders. This is where my fascination for filmmaking and lighting started - I was also inspired from my Dad's home videos that he would constantly make, holding his camcorder on every trip and adventure we took as a family, and I didn't even realize he was a big inspiration until I took the Media Arts class (Thank You).
Between 2010-2012, I attended Niagara College, in the BRTF (Broadcasting Radio, TV & Film) program, where I majored in Film Production, with a specialty in Cinematography. Before I had the chance to finish school I joined IATSE Local 873 and began working as an electric on many major TV Series and Features in Toronto, Ontario.
I also had the opportunity to work with several production companies and small businesses in Ontario, working on corporate shoots and expanding my skills in photography. I can say, I've experimented and done it all - corporate, real estate, promotional videos, commercials, and narrative films.
In 2021 I decided to move out to Alberta, Canada, where I could continue doing what I loved, but also to be closer to nature. This is when things shifted and I started to focus more on photography professionally as an adventure photographer for brands. Two years later, I realized my true passion was in filmmaking, working as a director of photography - Telling stories through lighting and camera.
So, here we are today...
I have managed to work on over 70+ productions in the union with IATSE as an electric, and on many short films as a Gaffer. I have always had a fascination with light. I also gained valuable knowledge as a photographer throughout the years, which ultimately all helped me become a very valuable Director of Photography (Cinematographer).
My main specialty is narrative, but I also love commercial projects that are like short stories, allowing the viewers to connect with the characters, than flashy and pretty images.
My role as a DP is about having clear communication, preparation, and taking care of my lighting and camera team - Making sure the director's visions are executed to the best of our abilities, as quickly and efficiently as possible.
My style is a bit darker and more contrasty, as I love the mystery, thriller and horror type of genres, while maintaining a clean and natural, but artistic look.
